iTunes 7.7 is out, Apple App Store is open for business

As the launch of iPhone 3G looms on Friday, Apple's been busy overnight getting its software and online infrastructure ready. To that end, iTunes 7.7 is now out, and it gives you a glimpse of the App Store, which will let iPhone and iPod Touch owners download and install third-party programs.

At this writing, the iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0 software upgrade, which will add nifty new features to existing devices, isn't yet available through iTunes. Expect that to happen Friday. It will be free for original iPhone owners, while iPod Touch users will have to pony up $10.

You can, however, get a glimpse of the future by installing iTunes 7.7 and changing some preferences so you can see the App Store.

Download the new iTunes either by running Software Update, or going to the iTunes download page. I used Software Update, and was notified iTunes 7.7 was ready.
